Brett's Blog

Beginning in the late 1990s Brett Baker began sending a daily "column" via e-mail to a group of readers he recruited through America Online. Blogs were still new, and they weren't as pervasive as they are today. Brett wrote a couple hundred columns over the course of two or three years.

In January 2014 he resumed these columns on a blog, since the format had advanced over the years. In July of that year he began writing for ChicagoNow, a blogging platform for Chicago writers on all topics. He has written more than 300 posts for ChicagoNow, on topics ranging from parenting to politics, toilet seats to time, and cereal to Sybaris. (If you're not familiar with Sybaris, you should be!)

His blog is called Dry it in the Water, a peculiar name inspired by his daughter. A post on his blog explains the origin of the name. You can read every one of Brett's posts, along with the work of hundreds of other talented ChicagoNow bloggers, here.

About Brett

Brett Baker was born in Peoria, Illinois, and also lived in Springfield before spending most of his childhood in Northwest Indiana. He worked as a grocery manager, and for many years as a university administrator while writing for a small audience.

In the late 1990s he began distributing a daily "column" via e-mail to readers he recruited. He has been writing ever since.

His current blog, Dry it in the Water, is hosted by ChicagoNow, a blogging platform for writers based in Chicago.

He published his first novel, The Death Market, on Amazon in May 2014.

He is currently creating a new action adventure crime thriller series starring Mia Mathis, an agent in a secret, independent crime investigation organization. The first two books in the series will be published on August 28, 2017.

He lives in Northwest Indiana, just outside of Chicago.

What's Brett Reading?

In his book On Writing, Stephen King proclaims, "If you don't have the time to read, then you don't have the time (or tools) to write." Every good writer began as a committed reader. Reading helps me improve my writing, it entertains me, it informs me, it relaxes me.

Here's a list of the last ten good books that I've read. If you want to see all the books I've read going back for years, connect with me Goodreads
